Belgium’s Manon de Roey produced a second round of 67, five under par, to take a two shot lead into the final day at the Santander Golf Tour LETAS La Peñaza.

De Roey, a graduate of New Mexico University in the United States, had a good feel for Club de Golf La Peñaza the moment she set foot on the range, the surroundings reminding her of the terrain of the course she had honed her skills on during her studies.

The Belgian produced a run of three birdies to start her round and finished in the same way, recording a solitary bogey.

“Today I started really strong, I started birdie, birdie, birdie. I started on number 10 so it went well. And after then I just made pars on the back nine and then on the front nine I knew I was playing well and I saved some good pars, so that was good. And then I made a bogey on 6, the par three and then I finished birdie, birdie, birdie again.”

Looking ahead to the final day, De Roey commented, “I think I am just going to stick to my game plan. Keep doing what I’m doing, from the tee especially. I just have to make sure I get the right club and then for the par 5’s, I think par 5’s are a big deal to make a few birdies on because they are not that long, you can reach them. So that’s my goal, par 5’s under par and then just the rest the same.”

Current LETAS Order of Merit leader, Sarah Schober, produced the round of the day, a bogey free 65, to virtually guarantee claiming the ranking title at the end of tomorrow’s round.

“I’m really happy about my round especially as I am not feeling a hundred percent fit the last couple of days and I birdied all the par 5’s and even on one I had an eagle.”

“I’m just feeling really good. I hope that I will get even more 100% fitter for tomorrow. I’m just enjoying it to be in the lead and the whole thing like leading the order of merit the last couple of weeks is just amazing and I must just try to stay in the moment and enjoy it.”

English amateur Meghan MacLaren is tied with Schober after a second round of 68, to lie at 7 under par. MacLaren plans to attend the LET’s Lalla Aicha Tour School at the end of the year, with the intention of joining the professional ranks in the coming months.

The battle is on for the remaining four places on the LETAS ranking and a place on the Ladies European Tour for next season. Scotland’s Michele Thomson produced another 69, to lie in 4th place at 6 under, and set herself up to make a move from 6th position in the ranking into the top five on the final day.

Forty-one professionals and two amateurs made the cut, which fell at two over, 146. The final day gets underway at 9.00 tomorrow morning.
